The PRP Clinic
Patient Profile:
A 24-year-old male presented with progressive hair thinning and recession, primarily affecting the frontal hairline and vertex. The patient reported noticeable hair shedding over the previous 12–18 months, with a family history consistent with androgenetic alopecia.
Initial Assessment:
Clinical examination confirmed early-to-moderate androgenetic alopecia (Norwood-Hamilton Stage II–III). Hair density was reduced, with miniaturization of follicles observed in affected regions. No underlying dermatological or systemic conditions were identified.
Treatment Plan:
A combined therapeutic approach was initiated, consisting of:
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy:
Four sessions administered at monthly intervals. Each session involved autologous blood collection, centrifugation to isolate platelet-rich plasma, and targeted scalp injections in areas of thinning.
Adjunctive Medical Therapy:
The patient was advised to begin:
- Finasteride (oral, 1 mg daily) to inhibit dihydrotestosterone (DHT) activity
- Minoxidil (topical, 5%) applied twice daily to stimulate follicular activity
Follow-Up and Outcomes (6 Months):
At six months post-initiation:
Approximately 80% improvement in hair density was observed in treated areas.
Visible thickening of previously miniaturized hairs Reduction in daily hair shedding. Improved hairline definition and vertex coverage
Photographic comparisons and trichoscopic analysis supported these findings. The patient reported high satisfaction with both cosmetic and psychological outcomes.
Discussion:
This case demonstrates the effectiveness of combining PRP therapy with evidence-based pharmacological treatments in managing early-stage androgenetic alopecia. PRP likely contributed to follicular stimulation and prolongation of the anagen phase, while finasteride and minoxidil addressed the hormonal and vascular components of hair loss.
Conclusion:
A multimodal approach incorporating PRP therapy alongside finasteride and minoxidil resulted in significant hair regrowth and stabilization of hair loss progression in this young male patient. Early intervention and adherence to treatment were critical factors in achieving optimal results.
